Well worth it

Great for Identifying everthing, but lacking in what the trees lumber is best used for. Still great book to have.

Excellent book

This book is excellent for identifying trees here in the PNW, and I like that it also includes shrubs. The maps are detailed and easy to read. The ecosystem information is particularly helpful - I am amazed at how many species we have here on the western slope of the Cascades that are not found even 30 miles further away.I wish, though, that photos of the bark were shown for all of the trees and not just the bigger or more common trees.

A beautiful, easy to read guide.

The Author's photos are top notch and it can be read as an interesting book. You will be looking for places that you have visited or lived just to see the trees again. A wise investment or gift.

Beautiful book. Easy to read!

I actually bought this thinking it was all along the Pacific and I'm in Southern California. So I probably won't be able to use it a ton BUT it is an amazing book. The pictures are beautiful and I love the organization of the book. I know next to nothing about tree/shrub identification and I know this book would have helped. I'm keeping it on my shelf because I loved it so much. I just wish they had one for my region!

A Superior Resource

A terrific resource for anyone who wants to know more about the trees and plants they encounter while outdoors. It comes especially handy while hiking with the kids because I can use the book as an excuse to rest for a couple of minutes while I identify the same species of shrub or tree for the 20th time.I own 40 acres in the mountains and have used this book extensively. It is set-up such that identification is quick and easy. It's also a fun learning tool to use with my kids!I have owned a couple of other tree and shrub identification books and find this superior to all of the others, including the highly touted Audubon Society identification book.

Great Reference

This book is great if you're interested in tree identifying, which I have recently taken up. There are multiple detailed photos and descriptions per tree, which I love. The paper is high quality and while it's big, it is light enough to take out with you for some field work. Downsides: the page numbers don't always line up (it skips from page 224 to page 257, then from 288 to 225) which isn't good for a reference book, as at first you will be depending on the index to find content. Also, I wish they elaborated more on the Willamette Valley, as that's where I'm from - there's more Eastern Oregon shrubs than anything.

Not really a field guide unless you are already an expert

Three stars rather than one because of the quality if the book, the excellent descriptions, and good photos. Without those things this is a one star field guide. Without knowledge of families you have to leaf through hundreds of pages to find your tree or shrub. This shouldn’t really be called a field guide. Most people look for similar colors or leaf shapes and narrow down from there. I like the quality of the book but it is not one I would ever use in the field or I would spend half my time reading the book instead of enjoying my hike. I’m not sorry I bought it but it really isn’t what I think of as a field guide.

Great pictures

Love it! We have used it a lot already for conifer ID. There's a lot of pictures and detailed information. I think we will buy more from the series.
