Expected more depth
Book did not have as much depth as I expected, possibly because each chapter is so short. It is pretty much a collection of several New Testament Bible verses.

Weighty biblical truths in a small book for the bedrock of our understanding of our salvation.
Picked this up in preparation for Easter, and finished it on Easter Monday. This book is intriguing. Before you read the book, how many reasons you can name why Jesus came to die? In fact I believe very few of us actually would have spent much time to work it out in great depth. We may be able to name at most 10 from our theology, but Piper lists 50! Thus the first thing about this is that - it would be pushing for most Christians to name 50 reasons why Christ came to die. Therefore it is very worthwhile to deepen our understanding. The number shows the richness in Christ's work that we may have missed. It is a blessing then to be guided patiently through. The second thing about this book is that it expounds the heavenly things in precision. I like this a lot. It doesn't use sentimental language but appeal to us as it is laid out in the bible. It takes us to discover the significance of Bible verses that I am familiar with but have pondered what they really mean. For example: These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (John 15:11) Or the night before he died, knowing what was coming, Jesus prayed, "Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. (John 17:5)What is the main interest of the devil? What is his one lethal weapon? If Christ dies for Christ and for his own glory, how then is it love? What is the difference between a pardon and justification? The book does not dodge difficult questions over which people may stumble about Christ and the salvation plan. There is truthfulness in exposing the questions, and faithfulness in giving the biblical answers. Whether reader would accept the biblical answers is personal journey in Christ.Although a small book, it is weighty in what it is conveying. It would not do it justice in reading it through fast either, lest we are not absorbing. This is so fundamental to our Christian faith that it should be listed as Christian classics for all to read. It will form the bedrock of our understanding of our faith. It is also a book that we should revisit again and again until the biblical truths are engraved in our heart and absorbed into our blood stream. A thought came to mind however on the resurrection Sunday - I wonder if Piper could produce a parallel book on why Jesus must resurrect. Romans 4:25 says that Jesus was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.

Not balanced, but contains much truth
Like Piper's other writings, this book contains much truth, but is not balanced. You would do better with a book like, "The Cross of Christ", by John Stott: 9780851106748. Piper's emphasis on us, our 'needs' and our pleasure, over against God's holiness & glory, comes throughout his writings. It is less easy to spot false-teaching when the main indicators are matters of omission and imbalance. However, Piper manages to lead us astray in a proportion of what he advocates.
